The answer appears to be yes, and the mechanism is more interesting than the headline suggests.

Behavioural research has long distinguished between two ways of structuring reward: you get something every time you perform a behaviour, or you get it unpredictably. B.F. A fixed-ratio schedule — reward every tenth response — produces a distinctive pattern of effort followed by a pause. A variable schedule smooths that out. Neither is inherently virtuous or dangerous. What matters is the ratio of effort to signal.
By mid-afternoon, most knowledge work has drifted into a state of almost no signal at all. You are editing a document, reconciling a spreadsheet, working through a queue of tickets. The work is real, but the feedback is delayed by hours or days. The subjective experience is that you are pushing without knowing whether anything is moving. That is not a motivation failure. It is a feedback design failure, and it is measurable.

Daniel Kahneman's work on loss aversion is relevant here, and it is often applied too narrowly. The standard reading is that losses hurt roughly twice as much as equivalent gains please. Why competitive framing changes persistence, not just enjoyment

The usual explanation — that games are fun and work is not — does not survive contact with the evidence. Losing a ranked match is not fun. It is irritating.
What the ranked structure provides is a continuously updated answer to the question am I getting better? That answer arrives every fifteen to twenty minutes, sometimes every ninety seconds during a match. The skill meter is not a reward in the hedonic sense. It is information, and information about relative standing is one of the most reliably motivating things humans encounter.
There is a well-documented body of research on social comparison — Leon Festinger's original 1954 work established that people have a drive to evaluate their abilities, and in the absence of objective standards they do so against others. A visible skill rating supplies exactly the objective standard that most work lacks. You do not have to guess whether you are improving. The number tells you.
The practical consequence is that competitive framing does not merely make a task more enjoyable. It changes the time horizon over which effort feels meaningful, which is precisely what collapses at three in the afternoon.
The design principle, stripped of its context
Take the mechanism out of any particular setting and it reduces to three components.
A short measurement interval. The signal has to arrive within the span of a single working session. Ninety seconds is aggressive; five minutes is probably sufficient. A day is almost certainly too long.
A two-directional rating. The measure must be able to fall. A metric that only rises stops carrying information once it has risen enough, and it cannot generate the protective attention that loss aversion produces.

None of this is exotic. It is the standard architecture of competitive rating systems, and it is almost entirely absent from the tools people use to do their actual jobs. That absence is a design choice, not a law of nature, and it is increasingly being treated as one.
Where this is heading
The interesting development is not that any of this works — the underlying behavioural science has been settled for decades. It is that the cost of instrumenting a task with a live skill signal has collapsed. Where you once needed a dedicated system, you can now derive a meaningful rating from almost any stream of activity, and surface it in real time.
The risk is obvious and worth naming. A well-designed feedback loop is a tool for sustaining effort on things that matter. A badly designed one is a tool for sustaining effort on things that do not. The difference is not in the interval or the rating mechanism. It is in whether the underlying task is worth the attention being captured.
That is the question worth carrying into the next iteration of this work. Not can we hold attention longer — we can, and the evidence is fairly clear on how. But what have we chosen to point it at. The three o'clock slump is a solvable problem. What it gets solved in service of is a decision someone still has to make deliberately.
