The effect is not a small-sample artefact: it holds across desktop and mobile, across stake bands from 20p to £5, and it reverses almost exactly when the displayed figure sits at 95% or below. The number itself is doing work that the game behind it often isn't — and that is the problem.

The claim, and why the 6pm boundary matters

The 12% figure comes from comparing median session duration for the same game titles before and after 18:00 local time, segmented by the RTP figure shown on the info panel or in the lobby tile. Sessions on titles displaying 97.1% or higher ran a median 18 minutes 40 seconds during the day and 16 minutes 25 seconds after 6pm. Titles displaying 95.0% or lower showed no meaningful shift — 21 minutes 10 seconds to 21 minutes 30 seconds, well inside the noise band.

Why 6pm? Three plausible mechanisms, none mutually exclusive:

Attention budget. The post-work window is when most UK players have a fixed block of time before dinner, childcare, or a second screen takes over. A player who believes they're on a high-RTP game may feel licensed to spend that block on one title rather than tab-hopping.

Loss-salience. A high displayed RTP sets an expectation of slow bleed. When the bleed is faster than the number implied, the player leaves. That's rational behaviour, and it shows up as a shorter session rather than a smaller deposit.

The honest answer is that a 12% delta is large enough to be real and small enough to be confounded. Anyone quoting it as a clean causal effect is overreaching.

What "97% RTP" actually means on a slot tile

Here is the part that gets lost. A slot's RTP is a long-run theoretical figure, typically calculated over 10 billion simulated spins for a UKGC-licensed release. It is not a rate you experience. Over a 500-spin session at £1 stake, the standard deviation on returns is wide enough that the difference between a 97.3% game and a 94.5% game is invisible in any single session.

If the metric is per-account daily duration, the finding is more interesting and more contestable.

The variance problem nobody puts on the tile

RTP and variance are separate axes, and UK lobby tiles almost never show the second one. A 97.1% game with extreme variance — think a max-win slot with a 1-in-40-million top prize — will feel worse to most players than a 95.5% game with a flat, frequent-payout profile. The high-RTP figure raises expectations; the variance profile fails to meet them; the player leaves.

This is the mechanism most likely to produce a genuine 12% effect. It also explains why the effect is concentrated above 97% rather than distributed smoothly. Below about 96%, players seem to treat the displayed RTP as background noise. Above 97%, it becomes a signal — and signals that aren't honoured get punished with an exit.

There's a regulatory edge here too. The Gambling Commission's remote gambling and software technical standards require RTP to be published and to reflect the actual return of the game as configured. They do not require variance disclosure, and they do not require the RTP shown in a lobby tile to match the RTP of every variant of that title. What operators and players should take from it

For operators, the temptation is obvious: badge everything 97%+ and watch engagement metrics move. That works until it doesn't. The data in the sample points that way — titles with accurate, variant-matched RTP labels showed a smaller post-6pm drop than titles where the lobby figure and the default configuration diverged.

For players, the practical read is narrower than the headline. A high displayed RTP is a real, if modest, advantage over thousands of spins. It is not a reason to extend a session, and it is not a substitute for checking:

  • Which RTP variant the game defaults to, not which one is advertised
  • Whether the title is a single-configuration release or a selectable one
  • What the max win and hit frequency look like, since those drive the felt experience far more than a 1.5-point RTP gap

The 6pm timing is the most useful detail in the whole dataset. It suggests the effect is about attention and expectation management, not about the maths of the game. Players who are tired, time-boxed, and looking for a signal will act on whatever number is put in front of them. Give them an accurate one and the behaviour changes; give them a flattering one and they leave earlier, having learned something the tile didn't tell them.

Which raises the question the industry hasn't answered: if displaying a higher RTP shortens sessions, why is the incentive still to display the highest number the variant list allows? The answer is that acquisition metrics and retention metrics are measured on different dashboards, by different teams, on different timescales. The 12% sits in the gap between them — and until someone owns that gap, the tile will keep saying 97.3% while the default configuration quietly says something else.
