The 34% Question

Why does a sequence of near-misses keep us engaged so much longer than a clean break does? And what does that tell us about how the mind reads uncertainty — not just at a machine or a table, but in any setting where the outcome sits somewhere between skill and luck?

That 34% figure isn't a piece of folk wisdom. It comes from work on persistence in uncertain environments, and it points to something genuinely counterintuitive: the almost is stickier than the never. Understanding why has real consequences for anyone designing, studying, or simply living with decisions made under uncertainty.

The Asymmetry Between Almost and Never

Start with the cleanest version of the phenomenon. You are trying to complete a sequence — five correct guesses in a row, five successful attempts, five of anything where a single failure resets the count. Now compare two ways that streak can end:

  • A clean reset: you fail decisively on the second attempt. The sequence is dead. There is nothing to salvage.
  • A near-miss: you get four of five, then fail on the last one. The sequence is equally dead.

Behaviourally, these are not the same event. The second one produces measurably more subsequent effort. People try again sooner, and they try again for longer, than they do after an early, unambiguous failure. The gap is large — in the region of a third longer persistence in the near-miss condition.

This is not a quirk of one experiment. It sits at the centre of a well-documented family of effects.

Why the brain treats a near-miss as information

A clean failure is easy to interpret. The signal is: this isn't working, stop allocating effort here. A near-miss carries a different signal: this nearly worked, so the underlying capacity is probably there — you just need one more run at it.

The problem is that this second inference is often wrong. In genuinely random sequences, a near-miss contains no more predictive information than a clean failure. Both are just failure. But the mind is not built to read randomness as randomness. It is built to read patterns, and a near-miss looks like a pattern with one missing piece.

B.F. Skinner's work on schedules of reinforcement is the classic reference point here. Variable-ratio schedules — where a reward arrives after an unpredictable number of responses — produce the most persistent behaviour of any schedule he studied. The organism keeps responding because the next attempt might be the one. A near-miss is a particularly sharp version of that: it doesn't just say "maybe next time", it says "next time is very likely, given how close that was."

Loss Aversion and the Sunk Streak

There's a second mechanism layered on top, and it comes from Kahneman and Tversky's work on prospect theory.

Losses loom larger than equivalent gains. Once you have four of five, you are holding something that feels like an asset — a streak in progress. Failing on the fifth doesn't just deny you a win; it takes away something you had built. That loss is felt more keenly than the equivalent gain would have been.

Now consider what this does to the decision to continue. After an early failure, you have nothing invested and nothing to lose. After a late near-miss, you have a specific, vivid, just-destroyed thing to recover. The psychological ledger is not balanced between the two conditions, even though the objective position is identical.

The specific study worth knowing

The clearest demonstration comes from research on persistence in streak-based tasks, where participants attempt to build a run of successful outcomes and the run resets on any failure. When the failure lands on the final step — the near-miss condition — participants show substantially longer subsequent engagement than when it lands early. The 34% figure describes that difference in persistence.

What makes this interesting is that the near-miss participants were not better positioned to succeed. Their objective probability on the next attempt was identical to the early-failure group's. The extra effort was driven entirely by how the failure was framed by its position in the sequence.

This is the same architecture that shows up in skill-plus-luck domains more broadly: competitive games with visible progress bars, timed challenges, ranked ladders, even fitness streaks. Anywhere a near-miss is legible as "so close", persistence inflates.

Where This Bites in Competitive Play

Think about how modern competitive systems are built. Ranked ladders, promotion thresholds, qualifying rounds, tournament structures with a razor-thin margin between advancing and going home.

These systems generate near-misses constantly, and they do so by design — not maliciously, but because a competitive structure that produces decisive blowouts at every stage is boring and demoralising. Close margins are exciting. Close margins are also, structurally, near-misses for everyone who loses them.

The behavioural consequence is a population of players who lose a qualifying match by one point and immediately queue again, while players who lose by a wide margin log off. The system has, without anyone intending it, sorted its most persistent users by how narrowly they lost.

There's nothing inherently wrong with this. Persistence after a close loss is often adaptive — in genuinely skill-driven domains, a near-miss really does carry information about your capability. The trap is when the domain is more random than it feels, and the near-miss is reading as skill-signal when it's actually noise.

A practical test

Here's a question worth applying to any streak you're chasing: if I ignore how close I came and look only at the outcome, does the evidence support continuing?

If yes, continue — the near-miss was genuinely informative.

If no, and the only reason you're continuing is that it was close, you're responding to sequence position rather than to evidence. That's the mechanism working on you.

What to Do With This

The forward-looking part is not "avoid near-misses" — you can't, they're a structural feature of any uncertain environment. It's about recognising the specific moment when the near-miss is doing the work.

Three things worth building into how you read your own decisions:

Separate the streak from the signal. A streak is a narrative device. The underlying question is whether each attempt is genuinely independent and whether your capability is actually improving. If attempts are independent and you're not improving, the streak length is irrelevant to your odds.

Watch for the four-of-five feeling. The moment you notice yourself thinking "I was so close", pause. That thought is a reliable marker that loss aversion has entered the room. It doesn't mean the thought is wrong — it means it needs auditing.

Distinguish skill domains from luck domains before you decide. In a domain where practice genuinely moves outcomes, a near-miss is a useful prompt to keep going. In a domain where it doesn't, the near-miss is a trap dressed as encouragement.

The 34% figure is not a warning about any particular activity. It's a description of a cognitive default — one that fires whether you're building a streak in a game, chasing a sales target, or revising for an exam you nearly passed. Knowing the default exists is the first step to deciding, deliberately, whether to follow it.
